CBD & Your Skin

Creating a Natural Balance

Our powerful, key ingredient in all of our products is Cannabidiol, or CBD. Our CBD is derived from agricultural hemp, a member of the cannabis family of plants. Cannabis has several sub-species, including marijuana and hemp. Unlike marijuana, hemp is not psychoactive, containing only trace amounts of THC—the psychoactive chemical that produces the euphoric “high” in the brain. Therefore, hemp and its byproducts—including CBD do not produce the psychoactive high that other forms of cannabis trigger. However, it does contain similar therapeutic properties, shown in studies to support overall health.

All species of cannabis, including hemp and marijuana, interact with an existing system in the human body known as the Endocannabinoid System, or ECS. The ECS is made up of cannabinoid receptors, which is the largest receptor system known to exist in the human body. These receptors are found in the brain, connective tissues, glands, immune cells and your body’s largest organ—the skin—all with the goal to keep things running in tip-top shape. These receptors are activated by different classes of cannabinoid compounds: phytocannabinoids, occurring in the cannabis plant; endogenous cannabinoids, produced in the body; and synthetic cannabinoids, chemically synthesized in a laboratory. These compounds activate the receptors directly by binding to cannabinoid receptors, or indirectly by modulating the activity of the ECS.

Skincare Benefits

Sugar Scrubs

Our most gentle exfoliant, perfect for sensitive skin. We use both white and brown sugar in different blends, allowing these scrubs to be used on your body, face and lips. Sugar is a natural source of glycolic acid, it penetrates the skin and helps to encourage cell turnover—generating fresher, younger looking skin. It also allows moisture to be pulled and kept in, leaving your skin nourished and hydrated.

Salt Scrubs

We use fine salt, however it is naturally a little more course than sugar granules, so Salt Scrubs should only be used on the body or feet. Pink Himalayan Sea Salt is renowned for its detoxifying properties, drawing out toxins from the body by driving out dirt, pollution and bacteria within the pores, enabling skin to remain clean and pure. Salt is also packed with minerals that naturally reduce inflammation.

Coffee Scrub

Packed with caffeine, it stimulates the skin providing firming effects of tightening and toning. It also offers caffeic acid, which can aid in the production of collagen, helping your skin stay looking younger, providing added firmness and elasticity. Coffee also contains a multitude of antioxidants, including hydrocinnamic acids and polyphenols, which naturalize free radicals and prevent oxidative stress.

Soaks are designed for bath lovers! When added to a warm bath, our Epsom Soak allows you to submerge your body in an Epsom Salt and CBD Oil blend. Epsom salt naturally helps to relieve pain, muscle cramps, inflammation, headaches and even promote feelings of relaxation. With our hemp oil infusion, you get an added boost of potency to reduce those symptoms.

Our Balms are the perfect targeted topical treatment for your face or body, designed to relieve pain and inflammation, as well as positively influence your skin’s health. We combine thoughtful, natural ingredients with our high-quality CBD oil to bring powerful protection and relief.

Massage Oil

Our Massage Oil opens up your skins sensory profile to relax the muscles, so you can massage deeper without causing pain. Our Massage Oil is a natural source of linoleic acid and vitamin E, helping to improve the quality, texture and tone of skin, as well as facilitating in the regeneration of new skin cells. Our blend prevents water from leaving the skin, locking in moisture for glowing, nourished skin.

It has been shown that cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) exist in practically all cell types throughout the layers of the skin, working at various levels to maintain homeostasis. It can be inferred that unhealthy activity of the skin’s “cannabinoid tone” likely contributes to the development of highly-prevalent conditions including acne, dry skin, inflammation and eczema. CBD has been shown to work indirectly with the CB receptors in your body to help the ECS function more effectively, keeping internal processes stable and balanced. In the skin specifically, CBD helps to mediate in processes such as pain perception, inflammation, cell turnover and more. “Because the skin has its own [ECS], just the superficial application of CBD by itself is extremely helpful,” says Raj Gupta, chief scientific officer of Colorado Springs–based Folium Biosciences.

Activation of CB receptors by endocannabinoids on epidermal cells regulates normal function of the skin as a barrier. When CB1 or CB2 are engaged, these functions of epidermal cells are modified—whether through proliferation, differentiation or apoptosis—which are all important processes for the healthy physical defense of the body. A 2010 study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology revealed that the ECS is critical to the life cycle of basal cells, which make up around 90% of the cells in the epidermis. Healthy skin relies on the body’s ability to grow new cells and discard dead ones. Manipulation of the endocannabinoid system can help regulate the life cycle of cells for more radiant, youthful skin.

CBD as an antioxidant is even more powerful than Vitamin C, E, A, or omega 3 fatty acids, which are all also present in hemp oil, making CBD a good source for antioxidants. Because CBD is an antioxidant, “you can see changes in skin pattern, such as a reduction in hyperpigmentation” says Raj Gupta. Protecting the skin from free radicals, like UV rays, smoke, and environmental pollutants, is critical in having younger looking skin. Free radicals in the atmosphere cause fine lines and wrinkles; antioxidants protect our bodies from the damage of these free radicals, including fighting the effects of aging.

The ECS also works hard to control and maintain the activity of the skin’s immune and inflammatory system. This happens in two ways: 1) endocannabinoids exert anti-inflammatory effects, and 2) the skin’s ECS prevents the activation of the immune system when it is not needed. The physiological cannabinoid tone is also key to the healthy biology of the sebaceous glands. When endocannabinoids or their receptors are not properly produced or functioning, the glands are unable to secrete enough lipid-containing sebum and the waterproof skin barrier may be weakened, increasing the potential for microbes to invade the body. If the cannabinoid tone of the glands is kept in balance, it contributes to homeostasis and healthy skin.

Activation of CB receptors on certain sensory nerve endings can hinder the function of these structures. Most importantly, when painful stimuli touch the skin, its cannabinoid tone can inhibit the development and spread of pain, thereby easing the body’s suffering. The skin’s ECS can also effectively suppresses the unpleasant sensation of itch, which is the most-frequently diagnosed symptom in dermatology practice. The skin barrier “is very important for moisture retention, sebum production, and sweat-gland function, as well as skin-centric sensory functions such as pain and itch.

But perhaps most important, it appears that the ECS controls skin inflammation—so if an inflammatory or irritation challenge assaults the skin, the ECS fights against it” says Tamás Bíró, PhD, director of the immunology department at the University of Debrecen, Hungary.  Current research suggests that CBD has the potential to positively influence your skin’s health and appearance, while also providing therapeutic solutions for management of pain and inflammation. As we learn more about CBD and it’s impact in the ECS, we are likely to discover new advantages to CBD’s use on your skin.
